Cockroaches are one of the most unpleasant creatures to be existing in our houses and around places where we live. They are mechanical carriers of germs and diseases and can cause allergic reactions. Food and water attract these pests indoors, or else they remain outside because they prefer warm weather. 

1) Brown-banded cockroach

Scientific Name: Supella longipalpa

Appearance-  Brown-banded cockroaches get their name from the two lighter bands they have across their dark brownish bodies. It is one of the smallest of the invasive cockroaches, and the adult brown-banded cockroach may reach a length of 11 to 14.5 mm.

Place of Exhibiting- They are commonly found on ceilings, higher on walls, behind photo frames, and near motors of refrigerators and other electrical appliances. They also reside in electrical switches, closets, and furniture. 

2) German cockroach

Scientific Name: Blattella germanica

These cockroaches are a significant worry as they like indoor locations. 

Appearance- These are small in size, ranging from 1/2 inch to 5/8 inch in length and medium yellowish-brown in color. German roaches can be distinguished from other cockroaches by two dark parallel stripes on the anterior, dorsal portion of the thorax.

Place of Exhibition-  The preferred habitats by these cockroaches are Kitchens, bathrooms, and other locations that provide appropriate amounts of food, moisture, warmth, and shelter.

3) Oriental cockroach

Scientific Name: Blatta orientalis

These cockroaches are often called “black beetle cockroaches” because of their smooth, dark bodies. 

Appearance- The oriental roach is approximately 1 inch long (22 to 27mm) and dark brown to black. Males have wings that cover 3/4 of their body, and the female has very short wings. 

Place of exhibiting- They live in areas with decaying organic matter, be it of plants or animals. They harbor places where it’s damp, cold, and dark. These cockroaches are sometimes addressed as “waterbugs” because they hang out in moist areas.

4) American cockroach

Scientific Name: Periplaneta americana

Appearance- These cockroaches are quite bigger up to 1.5 inches, reddish-brown with a lighter border over the head and have wings

Place of exhibiting- They occur in the dark, damp, warm areas, often near steam pipes, in sewers, grease traps, wet basements, etc. If we talk about indoors, they mostly happen to be in restaurants, bakeries, grocery shops, breweries, pet shops, and other places where food is being prepared or stored.

5) Turkestan cockroach

Scientific Name: Blatta lateralis

These are also known as “Red runner” or “Rusty red” Cockroaches. It is a well-established species in Southern California.

Appearance– Males and females are strikingly different in appearance, with males adults ranging from about 1 to 1.25 inches in length, reddish-brown with fully developed wings. Females are dark brown to black and have extremely short wings. This species of roaches breed faster. Males are capable of weak flight, while females are utterly incapable of flying. These possess similar biological features to Oriental cockroaches.

Place of exhibiting- These species are usually found in outdoor locations such as water meter boxes, compost, leaf litter, potted plants, and sewer systems due to their seeming love for damp weather conditions.

Weather in California

The residents of California enjoy some of the best weather conditions in the world, and this lovely climate also becomes an attraction to an abundance of nuisance creators. Because of the wet weather conditions, Turkestan roaches are one of the emerging cockroaches in California as they prefer to live in damp and cold spots. Since this species reproduces very fast, it is one of the significant occurring insects in the state.

Proper Methods of Eradication should be followed to control these pests because once they infest, it becomes quite tiresome to get rid of them.
