Indiana is a beautiful state in the midwestern region of the United States, which ranks 38th in terms of having the largest area among the 50 states of the United States. With the scenic beauty and the comfortable atmosphere cockroaches are some of those pests which are found in the whole of the United States. They are not usually as common as they are in the other parts of the U.S. These are cited here as they do not need specific geographical conditions to sustain, and these are the most flexible in terms of adjusting to conditions.

The common species of cockroaches in Indiana are:

1. German Cockroach

German Cockroach

Scientific Name: Blattella germanica

These are small pests which are ½ ” in size, Light brown or tan, with two black stripes behind their head which are less than an inch long. Despite having well-developed wings, these roaches rarely fly and prefer to crawl on surfaces.

These are generally active at night and hide in the dark during the daytime. If you see a german cockroach in the daytime, it is quite probable that they have infested in large numbers in the available cracks. These bugs can detect and avoid insecticides and have excellent reproducing capacity and multiply very fast. Male adult roaches spend the majority of their time in harborage.

2. American Cockroach

American Cockroach

Scientific Name: Periplaneta americana

These are the common species of cockroaches. With an average length of 4 cm (1.6 in), they are reddish-brown and have a yellowish margin on the region behind the head. They have wings and are capable of flight. The nymph roaches resemble adult roaches, but they do not have wings. Males and females are almost the same size. It is one of the most massive pests in size, which is one of the fastest running insects.

They can be found in dank sewers and damp basements and heating ducts under hospitals. They can be transported into homes in boxes from the infested areas. They can cause several allergies and contaminate food.

Weather in Indiana

Indiana is a relatively cooler place, and hence only two species of cockroaches are spotted here. These two are also not present in an excessive amount because the average temperature here in winters is as low as -10 degrees celsius, while the summers experience 29-degree Celsius as the highest temperature. Roaches tend to die due to extreme cold, and they can live here only in summers due to humidity alone.
