The beautiful city is named after a river which was named after the settlement that was established along the river banks. The region is one of the significant producers of corn, wheat, soybean, and sorghum in the whole of the United States. The city is also an observer of pests and cockroaches are also spotted here. The major ones are German cockroaches and American Cockroaches while the Brownbanded and Oriental Cockroaches are occasionally seen in houses and remain outdoors only.

How do these roaches enter homes

  • These nocturnal pests crawl through the tiny gaps around doors and other open spaces.
  • These can also take refuge on bags, backpacks, suitcases, and other containers to enter homes.
  • Roaches are especially drawn to paper products, and houses generally have ample of these.
  • These move from one house to another through pipes and other holes in shared walls for searching for food.

The common Cockroaches in Kansas are:

1. German Cockroach

German Cockroach

Origin Name: Blattella germanica

These are small in size, ranging from 1/2 inch to 5/8 inch in length and medium yellowish-brown in color. German roaches can be distinguished from other cockroaches by two dark parallel stripes on the anterior, dorsal portion of the thorax.

German Cockroaches reproduce quickly and usually strive around the kitchen and the bathroom.

2. American Cockroach

American Cockroach

Origin Name: Periplaneta americana

They are easily noticed because of their large size. They have a shiny body ranging from reddish-brown to dark brown. These roaches stand at an inch-and-a-half or more in length, which does not include the antennae. They have a yellow margin on the pronotum, right behind the head.

These are also known as the “palmetto bug,” as they prefer hot and humid conditions.

Occasionally Spotted Species are:

1. Oriental Cockroach

Oriental Cockroach

Origin Name: Blatta Orientalis

It is approximately 1 inch long (22 to 27mm) and dark brown to black. Males have wings that cover 3/4 of their body, and the female has very short wings.

Since these are drawn to areas with more humidity, they are sometimes referred to as “water bugs.”

2. Brown- Banded Cockroach

Origin Name: Supella longipalpa

Brown-banded Cockroach is one of the smallest pest cockroaches; the adult cockroaches are approximately 10 to 15mm in length and identified by the yellow-brown stripes across their abdomen. They are unique insects because of the difference in the appearance of the males and the female body.

Brown-banded cockroaches reside in hotter, drier regions and usual nests are in ground-level areas or higher inside.

Weather in Kansas

The weather in Kansas is classified as humid continental, humid subtropical, and semi-arid steppe, which clearly states that humidity is too much in the region. While the winters are frigid, the summer season is perfect for cockroaches as it is hot and humid, just the way the cockroaches prefer to thrive in.

If you ever spot a cockroach in your home, you should check in all the holes and empty spots, which might become breeding places for cockroaches as they make your house dirty and affect your health adversely by being carriers of pathogens.
